Amelioration of Sepsis by TIE2 Activation–Induced Vascular Protection
Using an unusual anti–angiopoietin 2 (ANG2) antibody, ANG2-binding and TIE2-activating antibody, the authors showed that activation of the endothelial receptor TIE2 protects the vasculature from septic damage and provides survival benefit in three sepsis mouse models. [Sci Transl Med] Abstract | Press Release

FOXF1 Maintains Endothelial Barrier Function and Prevents Edema after Lung Injury
The forkhead protein FOXF1 is a key transcriptional regulator of embryonic lung development, and investigators used a conditional knockout approach to examine the role of FOXF1 in adult lung homeostasis, injury, and repair. Tamoxifen-regulated deletion of both Foxf1 alleles in endothelial cells of adult mice caused lung inflammation and edema, leading to respiratory insufficiency and death. [Sci Signal] Abstract | Press Release

Analyses of Endothelial Cells and Endothelial Progenitor Cells Released Microvesicles by Using Microbead and Q-Dot Based Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis
Researchers described novel methods to purify and detect microvesicles shed from endothelial cells and endothelial progenitor cells by combining microbeads with fluorescence quantum dots coupled nanoparticle tracking analysis. [Sci Rep] Full Article

mTORC2 Mediates CXCL12-Induced Angiogenesis
Scientists demonstrated for the first time that CXCL12 regulation of angiogenesis requires mTORC2 but not mTORC1. They found that CXCR4 signaling activates mTORC2 as indicated by phosphorylation of serine 473 on Akt and does so through a G-protein- and PI3K-dependent pathway. [Angiogenesis] Abstract

Two Functionally Distinct Pools of eNOS in Endothelium Are Facilitated by Myoendothelial Junction Lipid Composition
Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) is present in the luminal side of endothelial cells (ECs) and the basal side of ECs. To test if these eNOS pools acted in sync or separately, the authors co-cultured ECs and smooth muscle cells (SMCs), then stimulated SMCs with phenylephrine. [Biochim Biophys Acta] Abstract

Context-Dependent Effects of SOCS3 in Angiotensin II-Induced Vascular Dysfunction and Hypertension in Mice: Mechanisms and Role of Bone Marrow-Derived Cells
Scientists investigated the importance of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3 (SOCS3) in models of angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced vascular dysfunction. They examined direct effects of Ang II on carotid arteries from SOCS3 deficient mice and wild-type littermates using organ culture, followed by testing endothelial function with acetylcholine. [Am J Physiol Heart Circ Physiol] Abstract

MLC901 Favors Angiogenesis and Associated Recovery after Ischemic Stroke in Mice
Scientists investigated the preventive action of a five-week pretreatment of MLC901, an herbal extract preparation derived from Chinese medicine, against the deleterious effects of ischemic stroke and its effects on angiogenesis in a model of focal ischemia in mice. [Cerebrovasc Dis] Full Article

Directing and Potentiating Stem Cell-Mediated Angiogenesis and Tissue Repair by Cell Surface E-Selectin Coating
The authors present a targeted nanocarrier-mediated cell delivery method by coating the surface of the cell to be delivered with dendrimer nanocarriers modified with adhesion molecules. Infused nanocarrier-coated cells reached their destination via recognition and association with the counterpart adhesion molecules highly or selectively expressed on the activated endothelium in diseased tissues. Electrospun PELCL Membranes Loaded with QK Peptide for Enhancement of Vascular Endothelial Cell Growth
QK, a peptide mimicking vascular endothelial growth factor, was selected as the bioactive substrate and loaded in electrospun membranes for enhancement of vascular endothelial cell growth. [J Mater Sci Mater Med] Abstract

Naringenin Exerts Anti-Angiogenic Effects in Human Endothelial Cells: Involvement of ERRα/VEGF/KDR Signaling Pathway
Scientists investigated the in vitro and in vivo anti-angiogenesis of naringenin (Nar). Inhibition of angiogenesis was determined in vitro by using proliferation, apoptosis, migration, and tube-formation assays in Nar-treated human endothelial cells. [Fitoterapia] Abstract

Investigating Associations of Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression with Angiogenesis, Proliferation, Macrophage and T-Lymphocyte Infiltration in Canine Melanocytic Tumors
Researchers investigated associations between cyclooxygenase-2 expression and angiogenesis, proliferation and the inflammatory microenvironment in canine melanocytic tumors. [Melanoma Res] Abstract

Potential of mZD7349-Conjugated PLGA Nanoparticles for Selective Targeting of Vascular Cell-Adhesion Molecule-1 in Inflamed Endothelium
Modified ZD7349 (mZD7349) peptide, as an antagonist for VLA-4, was used for targeting fluorescein isothiocyanate-loaded poly (DL-lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanoparticles (NPs). Rate of binding and internalization of mZD7349–NPs to activated human umbilical vein endothelial cells were compared with that of untargeted. [Microvasc Res] Abstract

Endothelial Cell Responses to Biomechanical Forces in Lymphatic Vessels
The authors discuss recent advances in the understanding of biomechanical forces in lymphatic vessels and their role in mammalian lymphatic vascular development and function. [Antioxid Redox Signal] Abstract

Positive Feedback Loop between Cancer Stem Cells and Angiogenesis in Hepatocellular Carcinoma
The authors summarize recent advances in the understanding of the crosstalks between angiogenesis and cancer stem cells (CSCs), and their interactions in liver tumor microenvironment and their purpose that an effective anti-angiogenic therapy should also target CSCs for hepatocellular carcinoma treatment. [Cancer Lett] Abstract
